Check out two new papers from our collaboration with Dr. Yildirim's group. In the first one, we analyzed the effects of critical materials, electrode preparation methods, and operational descriptors on the discharge capacity and cycle life of the Na-ion batteries. Random forest regression was used to develop predictive models for discharge capacity, whereas decision tree analysis was used to develop heuristics for cycle life. Anode and cathode types are the most influential descriptors for the model, as expected, while the synthesis conditions and crystal structure are also effective. Congrats Burcu and Burak! https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S037877532201103X In the second one, we used machine learning to investigate the effect of critical materials and cell design factors on the performance of Li-S batteries using ionic liquid electrolytes. The study reveals that ionic liquid electrolytes show promising results in peak discharge capacities at high sulfur loadings and low electrolyte-to-sulfur ratios. Congrats Aysegul! https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/er.8611 Check out the first product of our joint project with Dr. Karaseva and her team at the UFA Institute of Chemistry, published in the Journal of Power Sources. Here, the cycling performance of lithium-sulfur cells with electrolytes based on sulfolane solutions of LiPF6 and LiBF4 was investigated. PF6- does not interact with lithium polysulfides, whereas BF4- interacts with lithium polysulfides and forms lithium boron polysulfides. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0378775322009600

Check out our new paper published in the International Journal of Energy Research! Here, we discuss the effect of the carbon-to-sulfur ratio on the lithium-sulfur battery performance. We use both experimental characterization and system-level performance modeling to study this critical link. Congrats Merve!

Check out our latest paper, where we discuss the impact of critical design parameters on the discharge performance of a Li-S cell by proposing a novel definition for the electrochemically active area based on the weight fraction of carbon and a reference porosity in the cathode. Co-first authors of this work are/were undergraduate students working in the lab. Hilal is now doing her Ph.D. at North Carolina State University and Busra, who is currently a senior student at Bogazici University, will also start her Ph.D. in the USA next year. Congrats Busra and Hilal!
